Descarbonização dos Transportes Públicos
PROJECT DESIGNATION:
UNIR - NEX DECARBONIZATION
Project benefiting from the Notice - Decarbonization of Public Transport from the Environmental Fund / Recovery and Resilience Plan Investment RP-C21-i12 - No. 01/C21-i12/2024.
OBJECTIVES:
To acquire 53 fully electric vehicles: 40 standard M3 Class I buses and 13 M3 Class II buses (commonly known as intercity buses).
DESCRIPTION OF THE OPERATION:
Notwithstanding the improvements achieved in recent years, in Portugal the average age of public transport fleets remains high and there is a low rate of environmentally more sustainable vehicles. Alongside this reality, it is noted that the cost differential between a 100% clean bus and an equivalent diesel bus (EURO VI) is still significant, making this situation an obstacle to the preferential choice for this type of vehicle. This operation will enhance the renewal of the bus fleet of Nex Continental Holdings S.L - Portugal Branch, with the acquisition of efficient buses that use clean energy sources, with better environmental performance, through the acquisition of new buses powered exclusively by electricity (batteries). These buses will be used in the provision of public collective passenger transport services under public transport service provision contracts established between transport operators and transport authorities.
With the acquisition of these Clean Buses for the renewal and reinforcement of the fleets, Nex Continental Holdings S.L - Portugal Branch expects to produce a significant impact on promoting the use of public transport, by strengthening the offer, increasing comfort and the quality of the service provided, as well as hoping to contribute to the decarbonization and support for the energy transition of the transport sector, through the reduction of GHG emissions, thus contributing to Portugal's achievement of its commitment to the Paris Agreement.
The operation has the following specific objectives:
- Acquisition of 53 100% electric public transport vehicles by the end of 2025;
- An estimated decrease in annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 5,168.38 tCO2eq, by the end of 2026;
- An estimated decrease in annual energy consumption of 1,295.8 toe, by the end of 2026
The estimated investment for the execution of the project is approximately €23,000,000, with the Environmental Fund financing approximately €12,000,000.
